Still Water by Mika Taanila – Vernissage

Still Water is the name of the moving image installation with which the Finnish artist Mika Taanila (born 1965 in Helsinki) fills the ceiling of the Stadtkino Basel, as the first artist ever to do so. To allow Bildrausch to remain present at the Stadtkino throughout the year, each festival programme will in future include a new ceiling projection to light up the foyer until the next edition of the festival. At the core of Taanila’s versatile work (films, installations, photogrammes, objects) – which we paid tribute to at Bildrausch 2015 – is the interaction with rejected techniques and utopias. Still Water, with its images of billowing waves, is thus something new for the filmmaker and artist Taanila: a quiet evocation of nature. The work takes on an ironic twist when you know Taanila’s inspiration for it: a series of water damages in his apartment and his workshop...!
