Venera wants to live and be young and free. Like any teenager. She wants to be like her new friend Dorina, who radiates everything she is not and does not have – especially when it comes to experience with boys. Venera has to subjugate every wish, every hope, every smallest bit of longing to her strict family life, which she shares with her parents, brothers and grandmother in a small town in the mountains. There is not much space, let alone space for intimacy. There is just a father who rules over his wife and daughter, and a mother for whom happiness is being able to dance secretly in the hallway for two minutes. Against this backdrop, Dorina's brisk and carefree nature is just the right thing for Venera and it gives her the opportunity to break out of her old life, even if it has consequences.
Not much else happens in Norika Sefa's film, but it is far from the entire story that is told in this quiet and breathtaking debut from Kosovo. Glances, gestures and physicality speak their own language. Looking for Venera's tension and strangely compelling appeal come from the film's unusually insistent camera, which searches for its heroine in almost every shot, but doesn't always find her immediately, yet always knows how to rediscover her in splendid new ways.
