Jury Statement

Our jury of three has unanimously decided to split the Bildrausch prize between two films that equally and magnificently defend and advance cinema and its possibilities, and hence life itself. Although aesthetically quite distinct from one another, each is an utterly unique creation of cinematic genius. These two films confront the histories of their countries that have forsaken and scorned their own. These are the latest films within an astonishing body of work by two tireless masters. We love the image of these two film-makers, working across the globe from another, wearing their Bildrausch kinship rings. Our jury awards the Bildrausch prize to Lucrecia Martel’s Zama and Lav Diaz’ Season of the Devil.

Honorary Award for Visionary Cinema

Paul Schrader

Preisträger*in

Jury Statement

This year, Bildrausch will present the Honorary Award for Visionary Cinema for the first time. Paul Schrader’s accomplishments as a director, screenwriter and critic have been ground-breaking, and his unconditional efforts as an advocate of a sophisticated film culture are unprecedented. Schrader shook up and renewed the American cinema landscape time and again, both as one of the pioneers of New Hollywood and in subsequent years. The first Bildrausch Honorary Award for Visionary Cinema is given to Paul Schrader as a sign of the festival’s esteem, respect and gratitude for his everlasting challenge of the cinematic arts.

Honoring the spirit of the Bildrausch festival and its commitment to new, bold voices, our jury is very pleased to award an Honorable Mention to a first feature of a filmmaker who astonished us with his distinctive poetic vision and resilience. We see in this exciting new filmmaker one who is obviously engaged in cinema as an intellectual, yet aesthetically visceral project, who embedded himself in his community in an extraordinary and intimate way. Our honourable mention goes to RaMell Ross’s Hale Country this Morning, this Evening.
