Lurfs visuelles Feuerwerk

Lurf's visual fireworks

Johann Lurf

Austria 2003–2014. 50 Min.
Color. DCP. Without Dialogue

The programme gives us an insight into the work of the artist and perceptual researcher Johann Lurf. 12 Explosionen (2008) leads us into the night: into a deserted, urban scenery, dimly lit by street lights and moonlight. Shot by shot, the Viennese squares and crossroads abruptly turn into crime scenes, and the subdued calm turns into explosive action – be it as an act of resistance, of humorous intervention, or as a way to conquer the city. Twelve Tales Told (2014) is quite a different matter, with its 3D staccato.

Lurf deconstructs the opening fanfares and logos of the twelve major Hollywood studios, which have etched themselves into our minds since childhood. The structuralist Lurf has dealt with cinema time and again: in his early found footage film (untitled) (2003) or his graduation film The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog (2009), which is based on thousands of 35mm snippets salvaged from Viennese projection booths. With 24 single frames per second, we are given a three-minute compression of “film history”. A thunderstorm also opens Embargo (2004), which with a seemingly simple camera movement manages to capture the sinister nature of domestic arms production. The same potentially ruthless violence is also visible in Reconnaissance (2012). And Vertigo Rush (2007) takes us to a bright patch of forest, where we are sucked into a Hitchcockian dolly-zoom which develops into a frenetic climax. (bs)
