Kai is stranded in Recife as a Chinese tourist and heartbroken. While looking for a pair of pliers, she meets the umbrella seller Fu-Ang. But when she goes to see him again in his store, he and the umbrellas have disappeared. All that remains is a box full of postcards. She begins to rummage through them. They are the notes that Xiaoxin wrote about her time in Recife, thoughts, ideas, fragments. Searching for the umbrella seller and reading Xiaoxin's notes, Kai enters the world of Chinese people who, like her, are stranded in Recife, albeit for different reasons. They seek their fortune as sellers of all kinds of Chinese imported goods, but fail to find it in the monotony of the foreign land.
