Mara is a young professor in Toronto. She is married to an experimental musician. Their marriage is strained. Matt, a friend from the past, appears out of nowhere. He is self-confident, charismatic and unpredictable. Their encounter initially causes Mara to be disturbed, but then she also finds pleasure in the forbidden thrill. She hopes to find something she misses in her strained marriage but wouldn't look for there. Together, Mara and Matt explore how far their new friendship can go. When Mara is invited to a conference and her husband unexpectedly cancels, Matt accompanies her. The unspoken uncertainty of their friendship increases. They embark on a balancing act between Matt's selfishness and Mara's elastic adaptability. Both are not without danger for either of them.
