After walking for several days, miner Elder, who some may recognize from the director's debut film Viejo Calavera, and his colleagues arrive in the Bolivian capital to protest against the loss of their jobs. They decide to stay and try their luck in La Paz. The huge city alone presents a huge challenge, and unexpectedly Elder begins to feel ill, out of breath, without strength ...
El Gran Movimiento is a timely reflection on progress, economic oppression, precarity, labor and the neoliberal capitalist paradigm. In a very unique sensory approach to these themes, the film, shot on 16mm, combines a variety of genres and levels, reinventing the genre of early 20th century urban symphonies dealing with industrialization.
An inspired reinterpretation that combines ethnography, cinéma vérité, choreography, magical realism, documentary and experimental form to capture the changing urban landscape of La Paz, a city in "metamorphosis", through the life experiences of those who live on its margins and who are rarely given a leading role, despite being the backbone of the great movement.
