Two friends, a reasonably successful Viennese actor and a musician from America, meet again in Vienna after 15 years. With the very first image, Ludwig Wüst circles around everything that will be constantly discussed in the following 74 minutes: The concept of "home", the loss of it and what that does to you. The two of them first stroll through the wasteland behind the Praterstern, a working-class residential area where a new "smart city" is currently being built, drink beer in the Prater and chat about the precariat, their past, the changing city and an uncertain future. The next day, they take a trip to Burgenland, to the "House of the Father". The trip to this house, which looks very similar to the Wüst family's real Upper Palatinate childhood home (which is due to be demolished this year), develops into a journey into the actor's ego: memories that were thought buried painfully resurface, but ultimately there is hope for reconciliation with the past.
Wüst once again proves himself a master of reduction in his choice of cinematic means, creating a radically authentic narrative form.
