UNTITLED

  • Michael Glawogger Monika Willi

His 54th 54-year-old Michael Glawogger wanted to venture around the world, and create a work in the process, where he did not know what the result would look like. Unlike his previous world-encompassing documentaries Megacities (1997), Workingman's Death (2005) and Whores' Glory (2011), this one was not going to focus on a specific topic. Specific topics only let you see and hear what you need – and an infinite amount of good cinema gets lost in the process. With the project Untitled, he wanted to surrender to the continents and their people, and create a work based on the experience of the moment.
After about one third of the journey, at the end of the first stage of his travels, to Africa, Michael Glawogger passed away as a result of a Malaria infection.

The only person who could create something from his hitherto recorded images and sounds in a way that would do justice to his sense-exciting/startling/sagacious/dignified approach was his longtime editor and confidante Monika Willi.  Using images of war-ridden ghost towns, proud wrestlers, diamond hunters, aroused donkeys and dusty landfills, she created nothing less than a life experience – a film that is touching, pervasive, confusing, intoxicating and enriching.
