THE INSEMINATOR

  • Bui Kim Quy

In order not to disgrace his ancestors, the father, who senses his death coming, wants to leave things in order. So the son has to find a wife and produce an heir, only then can the daughter marry. The only problem is that the son has remained a small child mentally and has no idea of the meaning and traditions of bisexuality; while the daughter, on the other hand, is eagerly hoping to finally be allowed to marry her suitor. But time and time again, the underprivileged son and brother returns from the marriage market alone. Then, in search of a way out, the desperate father's eyes fall on his daughter. But this is only the beginning of the escalation.

After several short films, Bui Kim Quy, who was born in Hanoi in 1983 and trained as a screenwriter at the local Academy for Theater and Cinema, makes her feature film debut with The Inseminator (Nguoi Truyen Giong) (2013). Set in a remote mountain region where the motherless family ekes out a poor existence in isolation, this visually powerful and sensual film initially tells its story of the curse of customs and traditions using the means of magical realism. And then flows as masterfully as it does stunningly into picturesque, delusional, sheer horror.
