Sampling, collecting and appropriating images is the basis for the work of British artist Mark Leckey (*1964), who was awarded the coveted Turner Prize in 2008 and whose sound and video collages have achieved cult status. For his famous video Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore (1999), for example, he used found footage of young people dancing exuberantly.
Mark Leckey also uses found footage in his latest work, with the music setting the rhythm and forming the central theme. He himself says: “MyAlbum: A Rough Demo-Video (2015) is a record of all the events of the 20th century that were significant in my life. It's my memories from 1954 to 1999.” The film, which will be released in London in October this year and of which we can show an exclusive preview, is a journey through time and music: from the birth of rock 'n' roll and his father's generation, his encounter with Joy Division in the seventies to the year 1997, when the world began to be made up more and more of bits rather than atoms.
