Sinnesrausch

The four latest works of the Bildrausch friends Anya Tsyrlina, Johan Lurf, Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Teresa Villaverde seduce us to listen attentively, to look, and to immerse ourselves. “Six, zéro, vingt-et-un...” a hypnotic voice starts counting in horizôn. The crackling of analogue soundtracks of newsreel bulletins from the 1970s, with their flying objects and young people being gifted with flowers, take us to a bygone age. The images are from Siberia, where the Basel-based artist and filmmaker Anya Tsyrlina was born. The film condenses into a reflection on memory, transience and experience. The Austrian experimental filmmaker Johan Lurf, whose visual fireworks dazzled at last year’s Bildrausch, once again plays with perception in his latest escapade Cavalcade. In the nocturnal scenery of an idyllic, splashing brook, an artificial water wheel spins away, which Lurf drives to a wonderful crescendo with strobe lighting and acceleration. In Blue, by the Bildrausch Ring winner Apichatpong Weerasethakul, two soundscapes also flow into each other: the night-time chirping and rustling of a forest is gradually overcome by the blaze of a fire, as a woman in a magical portrait tries to sleep, somewhere between dream and reality. The starting point for Six Portraits of Pain by Teresa Villaverde, who is also a Bildrausch Ring winner, is the eponymous work of the Portuguese composer António Pinho Vargas, which can be heard on the soundtrack, and whose pervasive force is adopted by Villaverde in her own cinematic deliberation on pain.
